What appears to be the decadence of bourgeois society accommodating fascism finally evolves past that to a twist ending. This is the kind of film I gravitate toward: sexy, allegorical, plausible, yet larger than life.
Charlize Theron is a goddess, of course, and that’s probably why I added it to my queue. Can’t get enough Charlize–because she’s so phenomenal, a great actress.
She had me hating her, but lusting for her, for two-thirds of the film. It was a frustrating experience. She is the one with her head in the clouds, as the world descends into fascism and war. Her ideology is hedonism: selfishness and apathy. She makes her case for decadence, while the world moves on to fight the Nazis.
At the crucial moment, I gave up on her. To hell with her after all… but I was wrong.
It had such an ingenious redemption that the movie warranted…
