Wyoming Has Effectively Made Citizen Science a Crime

Nearly every day I chronicle the slide toward a fascist, dictatorial police state here. Yet the overwhelming majority remain willfully ignorant, apathetic and even hostile to the plain facts.

The government of Wyoming has a strong message to would-be environmental activists: Look, but don’t touch.

Under a new statute signed into law by the Wyoming legislature, collecting data on state land—including private and public property like, say, the protected Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks—without the permission of a landowner is a crime punishable by up to a year in prison.

While this sounds like a simple rehashing of trespassing laws, the legislation also seems overly broad. “Data,” after all, could range from an innocent photograph to a soil sample. Even more worrying, “collection” is defined as gathering information “in any form from open land which issubmitted or intended to be submitted to any agency of the state or federal government.” The legislation also states that information collected without authorization is inadmissible in any subsequent court proceedings.

Obama’s wet dream effectively puts multinational corporations above state, local and the federal government. Any regulations that corporations don’t like can be cause to “sue” the USA and have the matter decided outside our borders. This is a knife in the back and must fail.

Bored with the usual Vimeo fare, I found this 2001 Sundance short here: Films Short.

If David Lynch and Krusty the Klown had a bastard child, and that bastard child was genetically enhanced with French chimpanzee DNA…

This movie may help the French in some way that is beyond my comprehension, but American audiences will find it rather head scratching at best.  It’s loaded with stunning trailer moment images, but perhaps this works better as a trailer.  I still have no idea what the hell I just saw, and I’m pretty damned forgiving with absurd dream logic – ask me about Mulholland Drive.

Anyway, you’ve been warned.  Some wannabe pretentious critics have been lauding this film, but I’m not one of them.  In addition to being incomprehensible gibberish in love with its own senselessness, It’s often boring for long stretches.  When it’s not, it’s frustrating as hell, as if the point of the vignettes is to frustrate and annoy the audience.  Whatever.
