Why Americans Don’t Understand Terrorism, At All

We live in an invisible empire, and so the mechanics of the empire are never openly discussed with the rabble. Americans don’t comprehend how power actually works across the planet that their country seeks to control. They live from momentary headline to headline without any honest, in-depth analysis of why events like the Manchester bombing occur and keep occurring.

When it comes to terrorism it is dire, urgent, and desperate that the public understand, if anything is to change. But it certainly appears that Americans never will. Perhaps Britons may, and then lead the effort to stop it.

In the United States, a bigoted faction demonizes all Muslims. That faction calls for more weapons and for their own wanton terror to be perpetrated everywhere. An opposing faction absolves all Muslims and calls for peace and reconciliation… with suicide bombers? The two sides mindlessly shout clichés back and forth at one another in a cacophony, and they drown out the larger global issues that have transpired for many years. The public is thus rendered impotent, irrelevant and ignored: divided and conquered.

Gross historical ignorance leads to this inability to see what should be glaringly obvious: the deep state—covert intelligence agencies operating in secret—play a “double game.” They are in bed with terrorists, whom they see as useful proxies. The terrorists do their dirty work for them in places like Libya, Syria, Chechnya and Dagestan.

Americans are largely incapable of comprehending what a proxy is. It’s one level too abstract. Ask people on the street about such matters, and the results would be akin to the 64% who cannot even find North Korea on a map. Korea’s location is in no way a secret, and the government doesn’t officially deny its existence.

The corporate media has been criminal in distracting the public from the role of western allied intelligence agencies in these terror games. Despite the decade-long Afghanistan Jihad against the Soviets, the similarities of multiple current conflicts do not make it onto the evening news shows. This default censorship extends into so-called “alternative” media too. There is an unspoken air of collusion with intelligence in the United States. Some matters, for example Operation Gladio, are simply never, ever brought up. That chapter has been tossed down Orwell’s Memory Hole.

Just what is a “proxy” and “proxy war?”

The Cambridge Dictionary says:

“a war fought between groups or smaller countries that each represent the interests of other larger powers, and may have help and support from these.”

Al Qaeda has been a proxy for US, Saudi and Pakistani interests since at least 1979, when Jimmy Carter’s CIA began aiding them and setting up the largest logistical support network in its history: Operation Cyclone. While official government claims mislead the public into assuming that the relationship ended in the late 1980s, it did not.

Al Qaeda maintains relationships with US allies, notably Saudi Arabia and Pakistan (where bin Laden lived for a decade and Ayman Zawahiri is assumed to be right now). Other states in the Persian Gulf region such as Qatar, Kuwait and Turkey are also implicated. These nations receive US arms and US protection. Although they are repeatedly exposed for aiding and abetting Al Qaeda and associated groups operating under various names, these countries are tolerated and rewarded by US administrations and other Western powers

This absurdity can only continue because of the gross ignorance and the distractibility of western populations.

The Manchester bombing produced some uncharacteristically revealing news reports in the UK, but these are censored to US audiences. US media is more tightly controlled, apparently, when it comes to the shenanigans of western intelligence services protecting terrorists.

Here is what we learned about Manchester:

• There were no fewer than five warnings that Abedi was a dangerous Jihadist, including warnings from the US FBI in January!
• The Libyan Al Qaeda franchise LIFG has cells living in Manchester England, allowed to remain by UK intelligence.
• Abedi, his father and his brother were known to be members of LIFG, and yet he was still allowed to return to Britain.
• An Al Qaeda bomb maker was also allowed to live in the UK.
• As many as 23,000 Jihadists are right now inhabiting Britain, and MI5 knows this.
• MI5 encouraged Jihadis to travel to Libya to fight and then later to Syria.
• Current UK Prime Minister Theresa May had a direct role in these open door policies, as Home Secretary.
• Similarly, 18 further warnings were ignored by MI5 concerning the London Bridge attackers of the following week, including one of them appearing in a TV news investigation about British Jihadists!

One of the friends who called the anti-terrorism hotline about one of the London Bridge attackers said, “’He was not arrested and was allowed to keep his passport. I did my bit, I know a lot of other people did their bit, but the authorities did not do their bit.”

Previously, and related, a radical Muslim cleric named Anjem Choudary was protected from arrest by MI5 for nearly twenty years!

Orlando spree shooter Omar Mateen was on an FBI “Watch List,” but then removed. Not much watching it seems. Had the FBI better things to do than keep track of a possible terrorist? The military-industrial-complex desires all of our emails, phone records, web searches and location data in real time―the whole planet’s as a matter of fact―but when they actually have a terrorism suspect handed to them in a ribbon they find better things to do than to continue watching what he does.

Haven’t we seen this charade before?

 

Boston Bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev was also on a “Watch List” during the time he traveled to Chechnya and Dagestan and was a great fan of “Russia’s Bin Laden” Dokka Umarov. Look how much the FBI learned as a result of that incident:

“When Mr. Tsarnaev returned in July, the travel alert ‘was more than a year old and had expired,’ Ms. Napolitano said.”

So, if a terrorist, any terrorist, simply waits a year it becomes open season. Good to know. Are you feeling protected? The idea that a terrorism suspect should be removed from a Watch List is absurd on its face. Who decided that there was a ticking clock for terrorists to act within some set time frame?

The 9/11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Midhar were in the USA for 18 months prior to striking. The so-called failure of the “watch list” in that case was already the subject of fifteen years of scrutiny since. The ridiculous actions noted by Ms. Napolitano above make no sense whatsoever. More than a year? So what?

In Omar Mateen’s recent case the FBI canceled his watch listing after 10 months. The Tsarnaev case has similarities to Mateen, which persist:

“The picture emerging Wednesday was of a counterterrorism bureaucracy that had at least four contacts with Russian spy services about Mr. Tsarnaev in the year before he took a six-month trip to Russia…”

That story ignored a more recent Russian warning after Tamerlan’s trip to Russia, warnings that were censored from US news media. You’d have to go to UK media to see that “Russia asked FBI to investigate bomber just 6 MONTHS ago after being spotted with a militant on trip to Dagestan.” That was in December of 2012. A little math, and we find at least five contacts with Russian intelligence over Tamerlan Tsarnaev who was allowed to freely roam Boston in a car with “Terrorista #1” on the front license plate. Even sources in the Saudi Arabian government claimed to have warned the US about Tamerlan Tsarnaev prior to his attacks, and they disallowed his pilgrimage to Mecca.

 

The Tsarnaev family had connections to both CIA and USAID, facts that never did appear on US airwaves.

CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou claims widespread “incompetence” at FBI. I’m not so certain about that. Not at all. Incompetence implies something unintended, and intent is that grey area we have yet to penetrate.

You see, the “double game” of America’s foreign policy needs to be understood and factored in, the game where America divides up terrorists into the “good” kind and the “bad” kind. This empire routinely arms, trains and protects terrorists whom it considers “assets.” A terrorism asset or proxy is one who blows up America’s designated enemies (Syrians, Libyans, Iranians, Russians).

 

FBI 9/11 whistleblower Coleen Rowley shed a bit of light on how things worked there. Rowley came the closest of anyone to actually stopping 9/11 by attempting to get inside 20^th hijacker Zacharias Moussaoui’s laptop. Moussaoui was already detained for suspicious behavior at a flight school the month before the attacks:

“Yet FBI Headquarters officials balked at allowing a search of his laptop and other property, still refusing to recognize that:
1) the Chechen separatists were themselves a “terrorist group” for purposes of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s (FISA) legal requirement of acting “on behalf of a foreign power” and
2) that Moussaoui’s link to Ibn al Khattab inherently then linked him to bin Laden’s well-recognized Al Qaeda group for purposes of FISA (the point in my memo).”

You see: Chechen terrorists were not officially designated as “terrorists” by Washington, much the same way that many Syrian terrorists today are not designated as terrorists in DC. Was the episode with Moussaoui “incompetence” or deliberate… Treason? Material aid in support of international terrorism? We do not actually know at this juncture given the scale of the ongoing September 11^th cover-up.

We do see a recurring pattern of protecting actual terrorists, including the 9/11 hijackers, and that should disturb every American.

Washington Post:

“The FBI scrutinized Mateen for 10 months beginning in 2013, putting him under surveillance, recording his calls and using confidential informants to determine whether he had been radicalized after he talked at work about his connections with al-Qaeda and dying as a martyr.”

So they had this guy on a silver platter, but someone decided that if he hadn’t blown himself up by some arbitrary “10 month” date to just let him off the hook. Is that a sensible response to people who claim ties to Al Qaeda and want to die as martyrs? To give them all the guns they may desire and look the other way? All the ammunition too?

Mateen had an extensive history of these Jihadist threats:

“Omar [Mateen] became very agitated and made a comment that he could have al-Qaida kill my employee and his family,” [St. Lucie County Sheriff] Mascara said Wednesday. “If that wasn’t bad enough, he followed it up with very disturbing comments about women and followed it up with very disturbing comments about Jews and then went on to say that the Fort Hood shooter was justified in his actions.”

Many people at FBI should be immediately fired and replaced with people who possess at least a modicum of common sense. There is no expiration clock on terrorists choosing to carry out attacks. That is a policy without any basis in reality whatsoever and is glaringly absurd on its face. If they’re actually looking for terrorists, they need to keep track of the ones they’ve been alerted to and have reasonable suspicion of carrying out a future attack.

The Syrian connection:

“Two months later, in July 2014, [FBI] investigated a Florida man who’d blown himself up in Syria in support of al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda affiliate also considered an ISIS rival. The suicide bomber knew Mateen, investigators discovered, but those ties were not of “any consequence,” [FBI head] Comey [claimed].”

The Al Nusrah Front has been protected by the White House, as shown as recently as last week! It is a proxy army fighting against the government of Syria, a guerrilla war which the US and its many partners support covertly and overtly. The connection with Syria is the problematic point in this Omar Mateen story, and all we have at this juncture are stories from authorities. The US CIA has created unlawful insurgent armies on the ground inside Syria for years. Recruiting more fighters is an obvious and crucial part of that process.

We still remain in the dark as to any potential links to Mateen’s employer G4S, which is a multi-national “security” firm with its own suspicious past. These people operate in the shadows without even the public oversight that CIA and FBI must submit to.

The multi-trillion dollar defense/security industrial complex has been repeatedly handed real terrorists, put them on “Watch Lists,” and then inexplicably removed them so that they may commit acts of terrorism domestically. This is now a recurring pattern and a great risk to the general public, who should demand immediate change and a complete overhaul of the dysfunctional system.

“Someone over there, especially the West’s intelligence services, obviously thought that if they act to destabilize their main geopolitical rival, which, as we now understand, in their eyes has always been Russia, it would be good for them. It turned out, it wasn’t,” Putin muses, saying he had warned the West about the possible dangers of supporting terrorists.

The “Arab Spring”

With democratic uprisings beginning in Arab countries early in 2011, violence came to Syria almost immediately in March of that year.  Clashes killed multiple police officers as well as demonstrators.

Also in the first half of 2011, at the start of the “Arab Spring,” Agence France Presse reported that State Dept. official Michael Posner admitted:

“The US … has budgeted $50 million in the last two years to develop new technologies to help activists protect themselves from arrest and prosecution by authoritarian governments.  And it has organized training sessions for 5,000 activists … A session held in the Middle East about six weeks ago gathered activists from Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon who returned to their countries with the aim of training their colleagues there.”

By August of 2011, Israeli intelligence publication DebkaFile claimed:

“NATO plans to send large quantities of anti-tank and anti-air rockets, mortars and heavy machine guns to the Syrian rebels”

The Turkish Connection

Nato member Turkey has supported the Syrian opposition rebels from the beginning.  As the BBC described it, “The Turkish government has been a key supporter of the Syrian opposition, and has allowed rebels as well as refugees onto its territory.”

A phone log appeared on the White House website that is jolting in its implications.  On August 7^th, the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, called Barack Obama for a chat.  In the wake of reported mass killings and kidnappings of Syrian Kurds by Al Nusra rebels, the topic of “extremists in Syria” was broached.

“The President and Prime Minister discussed the danger of foreign extremists in Syria and agreed on the importance of supporting a unified and inclusive Syrian opposition.”

This seemingly banal summary indicates Obama’s explicit support for the jihadi factions inside Syria, which potentially comprise half of the opposition forces on the ground, and are widely regarded as the more effective half.

Turkey has allowed the Syrian Al Nusra terrorists to pour across the border into Syria and then to return to safe haven. Turkey’s former Deputy Prime Minister recently accused Erdogan of supplying “heavy weapons” to the Al Nusra terrorists.

“The Erdogan government has sent a large volume of heavy weapons to the terrorist group, the al-Nusra Front, affiliated to the al-Qaeda in Syria and this is while even the US has listed the al-Nusra as a terrorist group.”

Not everything in this grand opera is what it appears to be.  War plans similar to what we’re witnessing on the ground today were developed by the Pentagon back in 1957.  The Syria plan called for US and British covert intelligence assistance to arm and support indigenous resistance movements.  Sabotage was a main feature as was a “Free Syria Committee” to stand against the Soviet backed regime.

While the US State Department blacklisted Al Nusra in December of 2012, the British waited an additional seven months until July19^th, for some unknown reason.  Some angry British lawmakers finally named Syrian terrorism, “the most worrying emerging terrorist threat to the U.K. and the West.”

Who is Brian Glyn Williams, and why was he telling his local newspaper such things relating to the alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev?  This question may be highly relevant to our understanding of the bombing and of the longstanding Chechen insurgency itself.   It was Williams who contacted South Coast Today reporter Steve Urbon first, and not vice-versa.  This important article indicates a series of contacts between professor Williams and the boy who would later be accused of terrorism and mass murder at the 2013 Boston Marathon.

Brian Glyn Williams bills himself as an associate professor of Islamic History at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.  That’s where his byline tends to stop, abridged as it is.  Recently however, Williams has come clean about his CIA past as a field operative in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and around Central Asia in the early 2000’s.  He studied, of all things, the motivations of “suicide bombers,” establishing himself as an expert on the subject.  Professor Williams also has a longtime association with the Jamestown Foundation, created by the head of the CIA in 1984 and steered by Zbigniew Brzezinski.  Williams’ role as an “analyst” for Jamestown Foundation is usually also omitted from his byline, when his editorials appear in such mainstream journals as the Huffington Post, The Atlantic Monthly and elsewhere.   Such failure to disclose his personal connections to US intelligence and to an intelligence-connected front organization mirrors his non-disclosure concerning his personal relationship with the alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in those very same publications.

A website called Major History profiled Professor Williams in March of 2013.  There they wrote, “[Brian Glyn Williams’] work has taken him to … Afghanistan to work for the Central Intelligence Agency.  Williams was tasked with helping law enforcement and intelligence agencies understand the motivations and behaviors of suicide bombers…”  As Williams’ formal education is in history, rather than psychological profiling, this may seem a bit out of the ordinary.  “[Williams’] findings about suicide bombings in Afghanistan were informed by his understanding of tribal identities as much as fervor for the Jihadist movement.  He came to these conclusions after being sent to Afghanistan by the CIA to perform firsthand research on these types of attacks.  This type of fieldwork is unusual for most academics but especially for historians...”

 

Which version of Brian Glyn Williams are we reading?

In 2008 Williams wrote a Field Report on Suicide Bombers of Afghanistan, for the Middle East Policy journal.  No indication was given to readers that his specific trip to Afghanistan was as a CIA operative.  That disclosure does not seem to have been made until March of 2013.  In the piece, Dr. Williams, a lowly associate professor of Islamic History, said, “…it was my research on Afghanistan’s suicide bombers that had drawn me from the safety of my world to the Pashtun tribal regions…”  That may be so, but it is certainly not the entire story.

Williams’ elaborate 2011 defense of the CIA’s drone assassination campaign is an exercise in bolstering the CIA’s policies without fully disclosing his own linkages or self-interests.  Writing in the West Point CTC Sentinel, “Brian Glyn Williams is Associate Professor of Islamic History at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.  He formerly taught at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies.”  That’s all that Williams discloses in Accuracy of the U.S. Drone Campaign: The Views of a Pakistani General.

FrontPage Magazine managed to locate Brian Glyn Williams after the Boston Marathon bombings and noted, “Professor Brian Glyn Williams teaches the only course in the country about the Chechen wars and said Dzokhar emailed him questions in the spring of 2011.”  No mention of CIA or Jamestown, but was this at all unexpected given Williams’ persistent pattern of non-disclosures?

As Williams is billed as the sole academic in the US worth talking to about the Chechen wars, he should quite know all about the Islamic Jihad that has raged there since the 90’s and which FrontPage describes clearly just further down in the article.  “When Osama Bin Laden set up a training camp in Chechnya in 1995, he wanted to ‘establish a worldwide Islamic state…’”

Who are the Chechen rebel “commanders?”

Canadian Broadcasting (CBC) reported in 2010,

“Last year, a charismatic rebel commander calling himself Said Buryatsky bragged on the rebel website Kavkaz Center he was training new suicide bombers….  Buryatsky… studied for several years in Saudi Arabia… A new leader, Dokka Umarov, emerged declaring the new goal was to separate all six Muslim majority provinces in the Russian Caucasus from the Russian Federation, and create a new Islamic state ruled by Sharia law.  Admired for his Saudi religious education Buryatsky quickly became Umarov’s chief ideologist.  He also became a valued military strategist.”

Doku Umarov is the current leader of the Chechen insurgency, and he is known as “Russia’s Bin Laden.”  His website Kavkaz Center is hosted in Finland.  On June 29^th of 2010 the US State Department designated Doku Umarov a “global terrorist.”  In June of 2012 Finnish prosecutors were reported to have linked the US State Department itself to funding for Doku Umarov’s website operations – the Kavkaz Center.

In April of 2013, Brian Glyn Williams suggested to his Huffington Post readers to visit the Kavkaz Center website to see that these Chechens allegedly don’t target Americans.  Williams claimed, “While the small number of Chechen rebels were later radicalized in the 2000s and came to see their war for national independence as a defensive jihad, they had no reason to attack distant America.”  Williams, of course, knows that an Al Qaeda training camp was established in Chechnya in 1995.  He suggests, “For a view into their world see the Chechen rebels’ website Kavkaz Center.”  The owner of that website in Finland, Mikael Storsjo received a “four-month suspended sentence” in 2012 for “assisting Chechen terrorists to enter Finland illegally.” 

Brian Glyn Williams knows full well that Doku Umarov is a terrorist and that the bombings gleefully boasted about on his Jihad website Kavkaz Center are in fact acts of terrorism.  As Umarov is officially designated a “global terrorist” by the US government itself, should Mr. Williams be supporting him, his group and his website rhetorically?

More to the point: Did Williams recommend this website and its activities to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev?

The distinction that Williams stresses repeatedly is that “they had no reason to attack distant America.”  The clear implication here is that terrorist attacks against Russians are of no concern and should not be of concern to readers.

FBI investigators have searched the home of a former Chechen separatist in Manchester, New Hampshire, after establishing that a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing met with him weeks before the terrorist attack that killed three and wounded 260 people last month.

Manchester police confirmed to Voice of America that Musa Khadzhimuradov’s home had been searched and that FBI agents were studying the content of hard drives on his computers.

Khadzhimuradov said secret service agents visited his home on Tuesday with a search warrant and took him to a local FBI office, where he gave samples of his DNA as well as fingerprints, RIA Novosti reported.

According to the FBI, bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev bought fireworks, which he allegedly used to make explosive devices for the bombing, in the town of Seabrook, which is located an hour’s drive from Manchester.

Tsarnaev also used to visit a shooting club in Manchester several blocks from Khadzhimuradov’s home, where he bought weapons and ammunition, the FBI said.Khadzhimuradov told U.S. investigators that he first met Tsarnaev in 2006 at an annual meeting of Boston’s Chechen community and that he had been in contact with him ever since.

Khadzhimuradov came to the U.S. in 2004 as a refugee. His lower body is paralyzed as a result of an injury received in Chechnya in 2001, where he was a personal bodyguard of separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev, currently living in exile in London.

UPDATE

Spelling is “Musa Khadzhimuratov” in US news reports.  Of which there are only a handful.

Long before the marathon bombing, Islamists in Massachusetts were helping militants in Chechnya.

 

These endorsements came because of, not in spite of, Basayev’s terrorist tactics. In one issue, Al Hussam ran a glowing review of an incident in which Basayev took hundreds of hostages at a hospital. In the same edition, it praised the formation of Chechen “suicide brigades to carry on suicide attacks,” writing “we have to fight evil with evil.” Another issue praised a terrorist bombing attack against a Russian mediator who was trying to negotiate a ceasefire with the mujahideen.

Checks flowed into CARE from individuals around the United States — sometimes just $10 or $50, with the word “Chechen Muslim fighters” or “martyr’s family” scrawled in the memo line. Sometimes individual donations ran into the thousands. The total collected from 1993 to 2003 was $1.7 million, according to the Justice Department.

Once deposited with CARE, the money was laundered through other fraudulent charities, including the al Qaeda-linked Benevolence International Foundation and the Global Relief Foundation, both in Chicago, and sent to front organizations in Bosnia and Chechnya. In total, hundreds of thousands of dollars passed through CARE for distribution to jihadists and jihad-support organizations overseas.”
