Vladimir Putin has come out this week with odd comments about someone collecting biological samples of Russian citizens for unknown purposes. This leads in a particularly troubling direction.

“Let them do what they want, and we must do what we must”.

Putin Questions US Air Force DNA Collection From Ethnic Russians

“Do you know that biological material is being collected all over the country, from different ethnic groups and people living in different geographical regions of the Russian Federation? The question is – why is it being done? It’s being done purposefully and professionally. We are a kind of object of great interest.”

That clock keeps ticking closer to midnight.

Wyoming Has Effectively Made Citizen Science a Crime

Nearly every day I chronicle the slide toward a fascist, dictatorial police state here. Yet the overwhelming majority remain willfully ignorant, apathetic and even hostile to the plain facts.

The government of Wyoming has a strong message to would-be environmental activists: Look, but don’t touch.

Under a new statute signed into law by the Wyoming legislature, collecting data on state land—including private and public property like, say, the protected Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks—without the permission of a landowner is a crime punishable by up to a year in prison.

While this sounds like a simple rehashing of trespassing laws, the legislation also seems overly broad. “Data,” after all, could range from an innocent photograph to a soil sample. Even more worrying, “collection” is defined as gathering information “in any form from open land which issubmitted or intended to be submitted to any agency of the state or federal government.” The legislation also states that information collected without authorization is inadmissible in any subsequent court proceedings.

More revelations from Germany
Just seeing if you’re awake.

Edward Snowden speaks further with Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras.

Interviewed in Der Spiegel:

Interviewer: Are German authorities or German politicians involved in the NSA surveillance system?

Snowden: Yes, of course. We’re 1 in bed together with the Germans the same as with most other Western countries. For example, we 2 tip them off when someone we want is flying through their airports (that we for example, have learned from the cell phone of a suspected hacker’s girlfriend in a totally unrelated third country — and they hand them over to us. They 3 don’t ask to justify how we know something, and vice versa, to insulate their political leaders from the backlash of knowing how grievously they’re violating global privacy.
