US Law Enforcement Officials Raid Venezuelan Embassy in Washington DC

Trump’s stormtroopers reportedly invade sovereign embassy and seize it, much like the crowds seized the Iranian US embassy in 1979.

Police Are Testing a “Live Google Earth” To Watch Crime As It Happens

With the complete collapse of democracy, justice and rights comes the assault on journalism.  These are inextricably linked.  Democracy and a free press share DNA.  When one is mutated beyond salvaging, they both die.

Fourth Circuit Endorses WikiLeaks

by Kevin Jon Heller

Well, not really. But that’s the unintended consequence of yesterday’s awful decision in US v. Sterling, in which the Fourth Circuit held that James Risen could not rely on journalist’s privilege to avoid testifying against James Sterling, whom the government believes leaked classified information to Risen. According the court, the government is entitled to Risen’s testimony, because he is the only “eyewitness” (a journalist receiving classified information) to the “crime” (leaking classified information to a journalist):”

ACLU Study Highlights U.S. Surveillance Society

Americans have been put under surveillance or harassed by the police just for deciding to organize, march, protest, espouse unusual viewpoints and engage in normal, innocuous behaviors such as writing notes or taking photographs in public ,” Michael German, an ACLU attorney and former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, said in a statement.

Damn if this wasn’t an unexpectedly good gangster film.  Unbeknownst to me, Lawless told the true story of the “wettest county in the world” under Prohibition.  Three legendary brothers stand up to the corruption trying to bring them to heel.  Dirty cops, dirty feds, the original drug war is even more fascinating than current films tend to be.  Yet so many of those same issues keep rearing their heads.  Narcs on the payroll, an intractable problem, a public that votes with their wallets, not much changes.

Tom Hardy, whom I hadn’t expected much from, delivers a twisted, believably delusional hillbilly performance that works perfectly.  His character survived so many near misses that he started believing his own legend about how invincible he was.  With this bit of irrational bravado he decides to draw the line against a corrupt city lawman and his enforcer, a chillingly creepy Guy Pearce.

A couple of intertwined love stories keep the testosterone from overwhelming the thing.  Violence is realistic and harsh.  Definitely one to check out at the Redbox.

Surprise two, the screenwriter was Nick Cave, who I thought was some kind of rock star.  Lots of Aussies playing Appalachians, and pulling it off amusingly.

Shot on the Arri Alexa, which still kicks Red’s ass despite the latter having more than 4 times the resolution, the cinematography is beautiful and the locations authentic.

Who’s Faking It? Pentagon “Cyber-Warriors” Planting “False Information on Facebook”

LA TIMES:

Cyber Corps program trains spies for the digital age

Students learn not only how to rifle through trash, sneak a tracking device on cars and plant false information on Facebook. They also are taught to write computer viruses, hack digital networks, crack passwords, plant listening devices and mine data from broken cellphones and flash drives.

It may sound like a Jason Bourne movie, but the little-known program has funneled most of its graduates to the CIA and the Pentagon’s National Security Agency, which conducts America’s digital spying. Other graduates have taken positions with the FBI, NASA and the Department of Homeland Security.

This illegal spying is being taught at a public US university now.  Pretty much, this signals open fascism, a lawless security state that scoffs at any and all citizen rights and restraints on government power.  The next-gen Brownshirts and SS drink lattes and plant false evidence from Starbucks.

With Swiss Cheese operating systems like Windows, with innumerable “back door” security holes, courtesy of Gates’ “bloatware” we are vulnerable to these new crop of hackers on the government payroll.  Not everything in the world of bits and bytes is as it seems, people.  You’ve been warned.
