Hollywood Mythology: How White Men Save the World

Some controversy over race and nationalism in Hollywood. But does he overstate his case:

Defending the decision to cast Damon in the lead role, director Zhang Yimou wrote, “Our film is not about the construction of the Great Wall …The arrival of (Damon’s) character in our story is an important plot point. There are five major heroes in our story and he is one of them – the other four are all Chinese. The collective struggle and sacrifice of these heroes are the emotional heart of our film.

 

I think another unmentioned problem, deserving of its own entire article is Hollywood’s myth about the hero/mercenary. This Great Wall film has Damon as a mercenary, a gun for hire, and yet he is praised by the director as a “hero.” So we already know where that’s going.

There is much propaganda to chew on. That insipid alien invasion crap Independence Day suffered from the same ailments. Nearly all big budget Hollywood films today are chock full of American propaganda and militarism.

 

As Sardar and Davies observe, “The myth of the reluctant hero is used to camouflage the fact that the majority of Americans actually do believe that America has the right to be imperial.

Ok, my wife rented this, as it’s available at your local Redbox this week. I wasn’t going to watch it, but now that I have I should say something. This was probably the gayest movie I’ve ever seen, and I’m a fan of lesbian dramas. There’s something about men going at it on screen that makes me uncomfortable; can’t help it.

Michael Douglas pulls off an amazing performance as Liberace, showing the many facets of this legendary entertainer. Matt Damon’s role is equally as impressive, as the two live out the memoir of Liberace’s live-in boyfriend. The story clicked because of its direct “gay marriage” aspects, where the two lived as though married for about four years. With gay marriage a hot button issue today it is easy to see why the film was greenlighted.

Perhaps knowing that both actors are actually straight factored into perceptions of the film and how it was received. Jim Carrey’s I Love You Phillip Morris worked similarly. Carrey and Ewan McGregor had an incredibly moving relationship on screen, more so even than Douglas and Damon — which is strained and often creepy.

The drama is tense in Candelabra, because of Liberace, his twisted persona, advanced age and obsessions. There is a doomed quality from the beginning, and Damon is cautious and jittery as Douglas makes his move. The age disparity is hard to overcome — for the audience — even though Damon’s character does just that. The characters are complex, and the events range from laugh out loud absurd to the expected and inevitable.

Another ridiculous aspect to that world is the in-the-closet nature of fame back in the day. Liberace was so flamboyantly flaming, perhaps the most out and in your face gay man in America, and yet the public relations machine persisted, and middle America bought that he was supposedly straight. His life was defined by non-disclosure agreements and payoffs to ex-lovers. It’s all a fascinating and unexpectedly true to life telling.

This anti-fracking movie was passable, but conventional and obvious.  It commits the sin of repeatedly talking about the issue.  Battles of words are a bit light on the hard evidence.  With exposition-heavy issue films, many viewers are going to be turned off, and Promised Land’s ratings hover near the 50% mark – perhaps a glass half full?

The good thing about the movie is that it is the first to tackle the hydro-fracking pollution in a widely-released drama.  The crux of the problem is clear, but the contrived plot created around it is simplistic at times.

Revolution Goes Global

Elysium Unspoiled

A desolate third world wasteland.  A gated, auspicious, white people paradise.  Slave sweatshop.  Tea and martinis.  Not all that implausible, but Elysium represents the ultimate gated community, while the third world has become the entire earth.

This fundamental class distinction leads to inevitable class conflict in Neil Blomkamp’s follow up to District 9, a similarly weighty sci-fi film.  Both films take on issues of global significance, particularly immigration, apartheid and capitalist exploitation of the underclass.  Blomkamp strikes a blow for the rest of humanity, and Elysium is a very good film, bordering on greatness.  For an action sci-fi thriller, it delivers the battles, the archetypes and the desperation of the world.  I heartily recommend seeing it.
