Las Vegas Strip shooter prescribed anti-anxiety drug in June

Records from the Nevada Prescription Monitoring Program obtained Tuesday show Paddock was prescribed 50 10-milligram diazepam tablets by Henderson physician Dr. Steven Winkler on June 21.

A woman who answered the phone at Winkler’s office would not make him available to answer questions and would neither confirm nor deny that Paddock was ever a patient.

Paddock purchased the drug — its brand name is Valium

Study Reveals How Ecstasy Acts On Brain, Hints at Therapeutic Uses

“MDMA also increased communication between the amygdala and the hippocampus. Studies on patients with PTSD have found a reduction in communication between these areas.”

“The findings suggest possible clinical uses of MDMA in treating anxiety and PTSD, but we need to be careful about drawing too many conclusions from a study in healthy volunteers. We would have to do studies in patients to see if we find the same effects.”

“If we adopted a more rational approach to drug regulation, it would empower researchers to make advances in the study of consciousness and brain mechanisms of psychosis, and could lead to major treatment innovations in areas such as depression and PTSD,” [the unfortunately named Dr.] Nutt said.

Nutt was sacked as a government adviser in 2009 after publicly criticizing the government for ignoring scientific advice on cannabis and ecstasy. He has conducted a small human trial using psilocybin, the psychedelic ingredient in magic mushrooms.

His study, using volunteers, suggested the drug had the potential to alleviate severe forms of depression in people who did not respond to other treatments”

Sorta mediocre

I guess I’m rightfully annoyed at this one as it promised two different sorts of things, but delivered something different entirely.  At the risk of giving away the big twist, the genre flipping is the central problem with this movie.

Unfortunately Rooney Mara starts off giving a very identifiable performance as a mentally disturbed woman in need of help.  She then meets up with Jude Law, who wants sincerely to help her, but the tools in his toolbox are of course the anti-depressant drugs given away thorughout the society like candy.  I was very on-board this first half of the film, and I genuinely believed they were going somewhere.
